(4.5 x 1011)(3.1 x 104) = 1.395 x 1016
Walk through:
1: add like numbers so 1011 would go with 104 and together so the final number would be 1016
2:multiply the two whole #s 4.5 x 3.1 = 1.395 as seen above
3: the real numbers are 450,000,000,000 x 31,000 = 13,950,000,000,000,000 so we just want to make those numbers smaller, so we take the first # in those big ones, put decimals after it, and however many # are after that we write 10 to the x power.

ReplyDeleteI'm a bit confused about how you multiplied 10^11 and 10^4 and got 10^16, and how you multiplied 4.5 x 3.1 and got 1.395.
As a math teacher I can follow this pretty well, and I can see that you pretty much know what you're doing (which is a good thing). But I'm not sure how well this would explain how to do a similar problem to someone who didn't already know how to do this. What do you think?
